Frequently Asked Questions MEMBERSHIP Q. How do I join PMI? A. Membership in PMI does not require PMP Certification. By joining PMI you agree to adhere to the PMI Member Code of Ethics. When you join the PMI International, you are given the opportunity to join our local chapter. Find more about joining PMI at PMI Global.
Q. What’s in it for me? Why should I join the Heartland chapter? A. We’ll help you develop networks of like-minded professionals. Just talking during the lunch can answer questions. We don’t charge any extra for the lessons learned over lunch. Additionally, chapter members receive discounted fees for chapter sponsored events.
VOLUNTEERING Q. How do I get involved? A. We’re always looking for next year’s officers as well as volunteers for various committees. Ask at the check in table at any meeting or contact one of the officers for more information.
Q. Do you have to have your PMP designation to hold a position on the PMI Heartland Chapter Executive Board? A. No, you do not need to be a PMP to be elected to a position on the PMI Heartland Chapter Board. As stated in the organization's Constitution & Bylaws, an officer need only be a PMI member in good standing.
PROGRAMS Q. What kind of monthly programs do you have? A. Our traditional monthly meeting is a luncheon with a speaker. Members earn one PDU for each meeting. Check the Calendar for times and locations.
Q. What is ProDev and does it qualify for PDU's? A. ProDev is the Chapter's Professional Development Day. It is an one-day conference which does qualify for Professional Development Units. This is normally held each year in September, in place of the monthly meeting.
Q. When are the meetings and do I need to pre-register? A. Meeting are generally the 3rd Wednesday of each month, but sometimes they get adjusted for holidays or to coordinate with other events. You can always check the calendar on the website for the current schedule. Pre-registration is encouraged, to ensure we have adequate facilities. An additional benefit to you, for your pre-registration, is submission of your PDU for the event with PMI Global and entry to win door prizes. Simply click Online Registration from the Calendar menu. You have the option to use a PayPal account or to pay at the door for most events. Normally there is no meeting during December and the June and November meetings are official Chapter Business meetings in addition to the speaker.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION Q. How do I get certified? A. PMI certification info is available at PMI Global. There are several different certificates available.
Q. What kind of educational offerings do you have? A. In addition to the PDUs for the monthly meeting, our VP of Education schedules a spring and a fall PMP study group sessions, with a PMP exam prep workshop. We also sponsor at least one advanced skills course per year.
Q. What is the difference between CAPM and PMP? A. PMI's Project Management Professional (PMP) credential is the project management profession's most globally recognized and respected certification credential. Currently the PMP requires: With a high school diploma, 7500 hours in a position of responsibility leading and directing specific tasks, 60 months of project management experience and 35 hours of project management classroom education. With a college degree, 4500 hours in a position of responsibility leading and directing specific tasks, 36 months of project management experience and 35 hours of project management classroom education. See PMI Global for the current requirements. Currently the CAPM requires: 1500 hours of work on a project team or 23 hours of formal education.
Q. How do I earn PDUs A. There are many ways to earn PDUs. The PMI Heartland chapter provides a number of these including: Membership Meetings, Professional Development Days, Education Workshops, and volunteer opportunities within the chapter.
Q. How do I record my new PDUs with PMI HQ? A. Each PMP is responsible for submitting their PDU’s and maintaining a file to verify each PDU submitted. If you register early for chapter sponsored events, however, the VP of Membership will submit the associated PDU form for you. To review and/or report your PDUs online, login to PMI Global.
CAREERS Q. How do I advertise jobs on the PMI Heartland chapter Web site? A. Project management related employment opportunities can be posted for one month free of charge. To submit an employment opportunity, please login to the member and visit the Career Center. Q. How do I receive notification about posted jobs on the PMI Heartland Career Center? A. Change your settings on your member account by logging in and selecting Update my Distribution List Preferences.
ADVERTISING Q. Can I advertise in the PMI Heartland chapter newsletter and Web site? A. Absolutely. We offer advertising opportunities in both the newsletter and on the website. The Newsletter is published monthly, except for the month December. The website ads are also available monthly.
